Is Soft Washing Safe for Roof Shingles?

If you've noticed black streaks running down your roof, you're not alone. Those streaks are caused by an algae called Gloeocapsa magma, and it's extremely common on Central Ohio homes. The question every homeowner eventually asks is: how do I clean it without ruining my shingles? The answer is soft washing, and yes — when done correctly, it's completely safe.

What Causes the Black Streaks?

The algae that creates those dark streaks feeds on the limestone filler used in modern asphalt shingles. It thrives in the humid, shaded conditions common across Columbus. As it grows, it leaves behind a dark, crusty residue that stains the shingle surface and holds moisture against the roof.

Left untreated, the algae can shorten the life of your roof by keeping shingles damp and accelerating the breakdown of the asphalt.

Why Pressure Washing a Roof Is a Mistake

It's tempting to think a powerful pressure washer would simply blast the streaks away. That's exactly the wrong approach. Asphalt shingles are coated in protective granules, and high-pressure water strips those granules right off — the same granules that protect the shingle from UV damage and weathering.

Pressure washing a roof can also force water underneath the shingles and into the underlayment, leading to leaks. Most shingle manufacturers explicitly state that high-pressure cleaning will void the roof's warranty.

How Soft Washing Works on a Roof

Soft washing uses a low-pressure application — no stronger than a garden hose — to deliver a specialized cleaning solution to the roof surface. The solution kills the algae at the root and breaks down the dark staining. After the solution dwells and does its work, a gentle rinse washes the dead growth away.

Because the chemistry does the cleaning rather than force, the shingles and their protective granules stay intact. The result is a roof that looks new again — without the risk of damage.

What to Expect

A professional roof soft wash typically takes a few hours, depending on roof size and the severity of the staining. The cleaning solution is biodegradable, and a reputable contractor will pre-rinse and protect your landscaping to make sure runoff doesn't harm your plants.

The results last. Because the algae is killed at the root, the streaks take far longer to return than they would after a simple rinse — often a year or more in shaded areas.

The Bottom Line

Soft washing is not only safe for roof shingles — it's the method recommended by roofing manufacturers for cleaning algae. If your Columbus-area roof has black streaks, skip the pressure washer and call a professional who uses low-pressure soft washing. Your shingles (and your warranty) will thank you.
